The Vanessa Y. Bryant Literary Scholarship is funded by Mynd Matters Publishing, which is headquartered in Atlanta, GA and owned by Vanessa’s oldest daughter, Renita Bryant.

The Scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior living in Peach County, GA, and this year’s essay topic is “PIVOT.”

The scholarship recipient will receive:

  • A cash prize of $500
  • A spotlight in the Mynd Matters Publishing newsletter and social media

• There is no cost to participate.
• All entrants MUST be juniors or seniors living in Peach County (GA) as of March 25, 2019.
• Essays will be accepted January 14, 2019 – March 25, 2019. The winner will be announced at the PCHS awards ceremony.
• Essays must be typed, in English, standard font (Times, Arial, Garamond), 12 pt, double-spaced, between 750 and 1,000 words. They must address the 2019 theme of “pivot.”
The idea of a pivot is to change the direction of an initial plan due to several reasons including a failure or a life-changing circumstance.

The most legendary pivot in social media history is the transformation of Odeo into Twitter. Odeo began as a network for people to find and subscribe to podcasts but the founders feared the company’s demise when iTunes began taking over the podcast niche. After giving the employees two weeks to come up with new ideas, the company decided to make a drastic change and run with the idea of a status-updating micro-blogging platform conceived by Jack Dorsey and Biz Stone.

When was a time you needed to pivot in school or even in your personal life? What led to you needing to pivot and when you did, what was the outcome? Also, what did you learn about yourself during the process?

• Only one submission per entrant.
